Welcome

This blog site will provide an overview of Inuit culture with the hopes that teachers will gain a greater insight on how to teach ESL effectively to these children and youth.  I wanted to focus on Inuit because I believe Aboriginal people are sometimes overlooked because they are Canadian, but they still face many of the same language and cultural barriers as immigrants to Canada.  It is impossible to generalize language and cultural differences across all First Nations, so I chose to focus in on the Inuit specifically.  Inuit people have been in Canada for over 5000 years, and make up almost 4% of people who identify themselves as Aboriginal.  Not every Inuit community has access to a school, and as a result they have to travel to non-Aboriginal communities to receive an education.  Approximately 50,000 Aboriginal students attend provincially funded elementary and secondary schools in Ontario.
